Christmas tree service project

Scouts and Scouters, our annual Christmas tree collection and recycling service project begins on Sunday, January 3rd. Every year this event is popular and leaves a positive impression on our community. Wear your work gloves and lend a hand for a couple hours to help our neighbors and to make sure the greens are properly recycled into mulch and wood chips. The project will occur again on January 10th. Do your part and help on one or the other of the two days of tree collection.

Camporee ribbons

Congratulations to winning competitors at the Scout Olympics!

Third Place Know Your Knots, tie between Radioactive Llamas and Eagles Patrols (no pun intended)
First Place Sit-ups, Curtis
Second Place Leaf ID 2nd, Eagles Patrol
Third Place Relay Race, Eagles Patrol
First Place Foot Race, Marshall

There were about 100 individual competitors and 20 patrols in the Lewis and Clark District Fall Camporee Scout Olympics. Well done!

Troop 42 was privileged to have eight cub scouts from Packs 17 and 365 visit us for the camporee. They all joined the events and pitched in to help as if they were regular members of the troop. The troop provided the flag detail Saturday morning, which included members of several patrols and cub scouts. The detail ceremoniously and flawlessly raised the Colors, followed by a round of applause, to officially start the camporee. It was a a great weekend to be in Scouting!.

Fall camporee events

Scouts and guests of Troop 42 will join the District Camporee at Camp Cedars this weekend. The weather forecast is dry and CHILLY. Low temperatures are expected in the 40’s on Friday and Saturday nights, and highs are predicted to be in the 60’s. Be sure to bring warm gloves, stocking hats for sleeping, and extra dry socks for an enjoyable fall weekend outdoors. You may also want to bring your fastest running shoes for the Scout Olympics.

Individual event are: discus throw, orienteering, running long jump/standing long jump, foot race, push up, sit up, and .22 marksmanship

Patrol event are: fireman carry, relay race, leaf ID, know your knots, scout trivia, and Saturday Night Skits. This is one reason why we practice knots at troop meetings: winning patrol contests!

See you at the camporee!

Fundraising and cooking

Next troop meeting starts the fall fundraising season with information and sign-ups for Christmas greens and popcorn. Sales officially start September 26th. Scouts will have until October 25th to achieve their sales goals.

The Breakfast for Supper pancake fundraiser was a great success. The Scouts, wearing their full uniforms, did the cooking, serving, and cleaning up for the event that raised about $400.

Mark your calendars for the upcoming Fall Court of Honor. The Scouts are working on cooking skills in preparation for a banquet at the Court of Honor, which will be October 3rd at Elmwood Park. Watch the troop calendar on the website for details about this and other troop events..

September Campout @ Ponca State Park

Hello Troop 42,

This  year the PLC is making a change in the September campout. Instead of heading south, we’re heading north to Ponca State Park. There will be great hiking and camping, but just a different venue.

Please be aware of an earlier leave time:  Drop off at 5:45 pm and departure at 6 pm. It’s getting dark earlier so a prompt departure in important. The weather forecast, as of Monday, is for highs in the low 70s and lows around 50. What great camping weather!

The return time is 11:00 am (estimate) @the 50th & Webster parking lot in Dundee on Sunday, Sept 13th.  Please remember to turn in the September Permission Slip (available via the “Permission Slips” link.

Scouts: If you have any questions, please contact your Patrol Leader.

It’s going to be a great weekend!

Yours in Scouting,

Mr. B.,

ASM, Troop 42.
