Get ready for summer camp!

Troop 42 campers, we are seven days away from summer camp and the forecast is a perfect week for scouting! Here’s the list of stuff to bring to be prepared.

Essential Equipment for Camp

  • Full Scout field uniform (worn during flag ceremonies and other ceremonies)
  • Activity uniform (troop or scouting t-shirts for wear any time when not in Field Uniform)
  • Order of the Arrow sash if you have one
  • NBZ claws and regalia if you have them
  • 6-7 pairs of socks
  • Sweater or jacket
  • Raincoat or poncho
  • Extra underwear and t-shirts
  • Hiking boots and extra shoes/sneakers
  • Long-sleeved sweatshirt
  • Swim trunks (wear on Sunday for swim test during check-in)
  • Jeans or long pants
  • Hat or cap
  • Pajamas
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste, deodorant
  • Bath towels and soap/shampoo
  • Mosquito repellent and sunscreen
  • Sandals (or flip-flops) to wear in the showerhouses
  • Spending money
  • Water bottle
  • Boy Scout handbook
  • Program items (see Class Descriptions)
  • Merit Badge book for each class
  • Pens, pencils and notebook for merit badge work
  • Sleeping bag or sheet/blanket
  • Pillow
  • Cot or air mattress or sleeping pad
  • Flashlight (with extra batteries)

Optional Equipment for Camp

  • Sunglasses
  • Mosquito netting
  • Bible/prayer book
  • Sewing kit
  • Padlock for pool locker
  • Camera
  • Writing paper, envelopes, stamps
  • Pocket knife (no sheath knives permitted)

Start getting your personal equipment together now. I large tote with a latch-on lid works well to protect your stuff from the elements and keep a clean tent, but is not required. Remember to wear your swim trunks when we depart on Sunday because one of the first things to do during check-in is the swim test.

Scouting for Food Saturday

Updated numbers at completion of the service project:

Scouts, Scouters, and Family Members contributed 42 hours hours of service on April 2nd and 9th for the annual Scouting For Food service project that provided 115 items and $100 donated to the Food Bank of the Heartland! Every patrol was helpful:

Ion Dragons Patrol 7.5 hours

Spartans Patrol 6 hours

Radioactive Llamas Patrol 6 hours

Wolverines Patrol 3 hours

Big Bang Patrol 1.5 hours

Eagles Patrol 1.5 hours

In addition, scouters and family members contributed 16.5 hours to make the service project successful.

Thank you!

Mr A

All members of every patrol are needed for the annual Scouting For Food service project. Bring a wagon or ask a driver to help carry the food donations. For service projects, numbers count: Last week, eight scouts distributed 1000 door hangers in our neighborhood over 1.5 hours. This week, we can expect to collect hundreds of items for donation to the Food Bank for the Heartland. Meet at 9 am Saturday at the Dundee Presbyterian Church, which will also be the donation drop-off spot.

Here’s more numbers to show value the service project to our community:

66 percent of client households served by the Food Bank have incomes below the federal poverty line.
85 percent of client households served by the Food Bank’s emergency food programs report low or very low food security.
23 percent of clients are children under the age of 18 years old.

Mr. A

Congratulations troop leadership

Congratulations to the following Scouts having been elected to serve the troop as patrol leaders.

Senior Patrol Leader: Simon
Big Bang: Mike
Eagles: Cole
Ion Dragons: Diego
Spartans: Mathieu
Radioactive Llamas: Richard
Wolverines: Will

These Scouts will serve a six-month term starting April 4th, except Ion Dragons who will elect a new patrol leader more frequently so that all the members have an opportunity within the first year.

Appointed troop positions of responsibility will be selected by the SPL with the scoutmaster’s advice (with a couple exceptions). If you are a scout in the troop and would like to serve in a particular position, tell the new SPL for his consideration when making appointments. The current leaders and a short description of their duties are available at https://troop42omaha.com/troop-leadership/.

Christmas tree service project

Scouts and Scouters, our annual Christmas tree collection and recycling service project begins on Sunday, January 3rd. Every year this event is popular and leaves a positive impression on our community. Wear your work gloves and lend a hand for a couple hours to help our neighbors and to make sure the greens are properly recycled into mulch and wood chips. The project will occur again on January 10th. Do your part and help on one or the other of the two days of tree collection.

Camporee ribbons

Congratulations to winning competitors at the Scout Olympics!

Third Place Know Your Knots, tie between Radioactive Llamas and Eagles Patrols (no pun intended)
First Place Sit-ups, Curtis
Second Place Leaf ID 2nd, Eagles Patrol
Third Place Relay Race, Eagles Patrol
First Place Foot Race, Marshall

There were about 100 individual competitors and 20 patrols in the Lewis and Clark District Fall Camporee Scout Olympics. Well done!

Troop 42 was privileged to have eight cub scouts from Packs 17 and 365 visit us for the camporee. They all joined the events and pitched in to help as if they were regular members of the troop. The troop provided the flag detail Saturday morning, which included members of several patrols and cub scouts. The detail ceremoniously and flawlessly raised the Colors, followed by a round of applause, to officially start the camporee. It was a a great weekend to be in Scouting!.

Fall camporee events

Scouts and guests of Troop 42 will join the District Camporee at Camp Cedars this weekend. The weather forecast is dry and CHILLY. Low temperatures are expected in the 40’s on Friday and Saturday nights, and highs are predicted to be in the 60’s. Be sure to bring warm gloves, stocking hats for sleeping, and extra dry socks for an enjoyable fall weekend outdoors. You may also want to bring your fastest running shoes for the Scout Olympics.

Individual event are: discus throw, orienteering, running long jump/standing long jump, foot race, push up, sit up, and .22 marksmanship

Patrol event are: fireman carry, relay race, leaf ID, know your knots, scout trivia, and Saturday Night Skits. This is one reason why we practice knots at troop meetings: winning patrol contests!

See you at the camporee!

Fundraising and cooking

Next troop meeting starts the fall fundraising season with information and sign-ups for Christmas greens and popcorn. Sales officially start September 26th. Scouts will have until October 25th to achieve their sales goals.

The Breakfast for Supper pancake fundraiser was a great success. The Scouts, wearing their full uniforms, did the cooking, serving, and cleaning up for the event that raised about $400.

Mark your calendars for the upcoming Fall Court of Honor. The Scouts are working on cooking skills in preparation for a banquet at the Court of Honor, which will be October 3rd at Elmwood Park. Watch the troop calendar on the website for details about this and other troop events..
